Why people look for a ChatGPT alternative for studying
ChatGPT is a strong study tool. Study mode is free on every plan and gives questions, hints, quizzes, and progress tracking instead of quick answers, and you can upload your class notes. People still look elsewhere for a few reasons. A chat has no fixed order, so a beginner may not know what to ask next. Sources come up when you search, not as a set reading list. Exam prep from your own slides works better in a tool built around flashcards and a study plan. And some learners want a tutor tied to a set curriculum, or simply a different model.
1. NotebookLM (Gemini Notebook): best for studying your own sources
Best for: students with lecture notes, PDFs, slides, or a reading list.
- Strengths: ChatGPT can read your uploaded notes, but NotebookLM is built around them: answers come from the sources you add. For revision, it makes flashcards and quizzes at easy, medium, or hard difficulty, Audio Overviews in more than 80 languages to review on the move, and Video Overviews. Deep Research imports more web sources when your notes have gaps. Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook on July 16, 2026.
- Limits: you need the material first. The standard plan allows 50 sources per notebook.
- Pricing (as of October 2026): free with a Google account; Google AI Plus $4.99/month, Pro $19.99/month, Ultra from $99.99/month (US).
2. Gemini Guided Learning: best for step-by-step tutoring with visuals
Best for: a concept you are stuck on, or homework you want to understand rather than copy.
- Strengths: Google says it breaks problems down step by step. A Google blog post describes it checking your understanding after each concept and using diagrams, images, and YouTube videos. For exam prep, the Gemini app also makes quizzes, flashcards, study guides, and practice tests for exams such as the SAT.
- Limits: Google's Guided Learning pages do not describe per-answer citations, so check what you will be graded on against your course material.
- Pricing (as of October 2026): free with a Google account; Google AI plans raise limits.

3. Claude: best for reasoning a topic out and long reading
Best for: self-learners who want to be questioned, not told, and who read long documents.
- Strengths: Anthropic describes a learning mode that asks questions so you find answers yourself, which suits essay subjects where you must argue a point. Projects keep one course's readings and chats together, memory carries context across chats, and Research on paid plans searches the web and connected tools.
- Limits: the pages we checked do not describe quizzes or progress tracking, so plan your own self-tests.
- Pricing (as of October 2026): Free $0; Pro $20/month, or $17/month billed annually; Max from $100/month.

4. Gregator: best for learning a new topic from scratch
Best for: a subject you know nothing about yet, where you want the research and the order done for you.
Gregator turns a topic into a course of 1 to 12 Chapters. It researches the open web across seven search providers, including arXiv and Wikipedia, and writes each Chapter from its 7 most relevant sources, chosen with a cap on domain and perspective. Chapters use inline footnotes and end with key takeaways and a Sources list. A course-level review checks for redundancy, difficulty spikes, and one-sided sources on contested topics, and revises flagged Chapters.
- Strengths: a trust overview shows the mix of peer-reviewed, institutional, journalism, and community sources. Up to 5 quiz questions per Chapter and a final quiz, graded on the server, with a wrong answer linked to its section. Greg, the tutor, has read your Chapters, remembers what you tell it, and can add a deep-dive Chapter. Progress and recommendations of what to learn next. Courses can be shared with a public link.
- Limits: no uploads, so it cannot study your class notes. English-first. No PDF export (Markdown export only). No native app; it is an installable web app. Narration only on paid plans.
- Pricing (as of October 2026): Free for 3 courses in total; Starter $9.99/month or $99.90/year for 5 courses a month; Pro $19.99/month or $199.90/year for 20 courses a month.

5. Perplexity: best for quick answers with sources
Best for: looking up facts while you study, with a link behind each answer.
- Strengths: citations in every answer, including on Free, so a fact you look up mid-revision comes with a page you can open. Pro adds a Research mode for in-depth reports and raises file-upload limits (PDFs, CSVs, audio, video, and images); Free allows limited uploads.
- Limits: it answers questions; it does not test you. Quizzes and a learning path are not described on the pages we checked.
- Pricing (as of October 2026): Free $0; Pro $17/month billed annually; Max $167/month billed annually.
6. Khan Academy and Khanmigo: best for school subjects
Best for: math, science, computing, and humanities at school level.
- Strengths: Khan Academy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that offers its resources free to students and teachers. Khanmigo adds personalized tutoring on Khan Academy's content, writing and debate practice with feedback, and coding feedback.
- Limits: a set catalog. It will not build a course on a niche topic you name.
- Pricing (as of October 2026): Khan Academy free; Khanmigo $4/month or $44/year for learners; free for teachers.
7. StudySmarter: best for exam revision from your own material
Best for: students with an exam date and their own lecture slides or textbook pages.
- Strengths: builds flashcards, summaries, mock exams, and a revision plan from your uploads or a subject name. Flashcards in three learning modes, a study plan with reminders, an AI tutor, and apps on web, iOS, and Android.
- Limits: its product pages do not describe web source citations.
- Pricing (as of October 2026): free plan; Premium from £6.67/month billed annually at £79.99 (UK site), with monthly and lifetime options also listed.

How to choose a ChatGPT alternative for studying
- Start with what you have. Notes and slides point to NotebookLM or StudySmarter. A topic and nothing else points to Gregator.
- Decide how you want to be taught. A tutor that asks questions: Gemini Guided Learning, Claude, or ChatGPT study mode. A course to read in order: Gregator or Khan Academy.
- Decide how much the sources matter. If you want to open the sources behind what you read, use Gregator's footnotes and Sources lists, Perplexity's citations, or NotebookLM on sources you chose.
- Check language and device. Gregator is English-first and has no native app. NotebookLM covers 80+ languages for Audio Overviews, and StudySmarter and ChatGPT have phone apps.
- Mix them. One setup: a Gregator course for the map of a new subject, then ChatGPT or Gemini to practice the parts you find hard.
