The best AI tutors for self-learners in 2026
For most self-learners, ChatGPT study mode and Gemini Guided Learning are the best free AI tutors: both ask you questions instead of handing over answers. Khanmigo is the low-cost pick for school subjects, at $4 a month in the US. If you want a tutor that sits on top of a researched, cited course, Gregator's tutor, Greg, reads your Chapters and can add new ones.
Disclosure: Gregator is our product. We put it where we think it fits, and we say where other tools do the job better.

What makes a good AI tutor?
A chatbot gives answers. A tutor makes you do the thinking. We judged each tool on six points:
- It asks before it tells. Questions and hints come first.
- It adapts. Explanations match your level.
- It remembers. You can pick up a topic the next day.
- It checks you. Quizzes or practice questions show what stuck.
- It ties to material you can check. You can see where the teaching comes from.
- Price and access. What the free plan gives, and who can sign up.
We read each product's official pages in October 2026 and list only what they say.
The best AI tutors, by use case
ChatGPT study mode: best free all-round tutor
Study mode is on every ChatGPT plan, including Free, and it covers most of the six points above. OpenAI says it gives step-by-step guidance instead of quick answers, with questions and hints first. Lessons adjust to your level and remember past sessions. Quizzes and open-ended checks test what stuck, and it tracks your progress.
- Strengths: a tutor for any subject; you can talk it through a problem by voice; upload your own notes and be questioned on them; apps on web, iOS, and Android.
- Limits: a tutor that follows your lead needs you to lead. The lesson lives in a chat thread, and you decide what to cover and in what order.
- Pricing (as of October 2026): Free; Go $8/month; Plus $20/month; Pro from $100/month.

Gemini Guided Learning: best free tutor with visuals
Google describes Guided Learning as a mode that "breaks down problems step-by-step and adapts explanations to your needs," and it asks open-ended questions. A Google blog post describes the tutoring loop: after it explains a concept, it checks that you got it, and at the end of a topic it gives a recap and suggests what to study next. It also pulls in diagrams, images, and YouTube videos.
- Strengths: free with a Google account; a tutor that shows as well as tells, which helps visual learners; quizzes with hints, flashcards, and practice tests on request. Notebooks in the Gemini app keep their sources in sync with Gemini Notebook; Google rolled them out to paid Google AI subscribers on the web first.
- Limits: Google's Guided Learning pages do not describe citations for each answer, so check a key explanation against a source.
- Pricing (as of October 2026): Free; Google AI Plus $4.99/month, Pro $19.99/month, and Ultra from $99.99/month raise limits (US prices).

Claude learning mode: best for being questioned through your reasoning
Anthropic's education page says Claude's learning mode "works like a good tutor: it asks questions that help you find the answers yourself." That is the first of our six points, and it suits subjects where the answer is an argument, not a number. Claude also has memory across chats, and paid plans add Research, which runs a series of searches across the web and connected tools such as Google Docs.
- Strengths: a tutor for writing, argument, and analysis, where the goal is to think more clearly; can bring your own drafts and documents into the session through connected tools.
- Limits: the Anthropic pages we read do not say which plans include learning mode, and they do not describe quizzes. Research needs a paid plan.
- Pricing (as of October 2026): Free; Pro $20/month, or $17/month billed annually; Max from $100/month.

Khanmigo: best for school subjects at a low price
Khanmigo is the AI tutor from Khan Academy, a nonprofit. Its learner page says, "Khanmigo never gives you the answer." It tutors on Khan Academy's exercises, videos, and articles, and covers math, science, coding, history, and the humanities.
- Strengths: a tutor tied to a full course library; writing and debate practice with feedback; real-time code feedback for JavaScript, HTML, Python, and SQL; speech input and spoken replies; career and college-admissions coaching.
- Limits: you must be 18 or older, live in the United States, and have a US billing address. Learners under 18 get access only through a parent account or a partnered school district. Its strength is school-level subjects that Khan Academy covers.
- Pricing (as of October 2026): $4/month or $44/year, sales tax not included. Teacher tools are free.
Greg in Gregator: best tutor tied to a cited course
Greg is the chat tutor inside Gregator. It is not a standalone chatbot. You start with a topic, and Gregator researches the open web and writes a course of 1 to 12 Chapters with inline footnotes and a Sources list in each one. Greg then reads your Chapters, can search the course and the web, and remembers what you tell it. When a question goes beyond the course, Greg can offer a deep dive that adds a new Chapter.
- Strengths: the tutor and the reading share one structure; quizzes per Chapter and a final quiz, graded on the server, with wrong answers linked back to the section; progress per Chapter and suggestions for what to learn next. Greg is on every plan, including Free.
- Limits: Greg works inside a Gregator course, so it is not the tool for a quick homework question. English-first. No uploads of your own files. No PDF export. No native app; it runs as an installable web app. Narration of Chapters needs a paid plan.
- Pricing (as of October 2026): Free for 3 courses in total; Starter $9.99/month (5 courses a month); Pro $19.99/month (20 a month).

Others we considered
- Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) has an interactive Audio Overview mode, in English only, where you join the hosts and ask questions by voice. It is a strong choice when you study material you already have. See Gregator vs NotebookLM.
- Oboe teaches through chat, podcasts, and flashcards, but as of October 2026 its homepage says "Oboe chats will be going away soon." We left it off the list until its new product ships. See Gregator vs Oboe.
Which AI tutor should a self-learner use?

If you are an adult in the US working through school-level math, science, or coding, Khanmigo is the cheapest paid tutor here. If you want to sharpen an argument, try Claude's learning mode. If you have only a topic and want a structured, cited course with a tutor beside it, use Gregator.
